Richard Lutes 1935-2017
A TRIBUTE TO OUR DAD, RICHARD LEE LUTES
Age 82, left this world on August 2, 2017 with a big bang. He had just emptied a trailer load of dirt in a field along Brewster Lake Road when he became the one in 1,107,000 to be struck by lightning. It carried him all the way to the next world. Born in 1935 in Beach City, Ohio, Richard graduated from Brewster High School in 1954 and married his high school sweetheart later that year. He joined his father, Wayne, in the construction business. Three children later the road was calling and Richard became a long distance trucker for the next 43 years. Richard's candy apple red Harley Sportster was a legend in the North Brewster neighborhood where many evenings were spent trying to get the damn thing started. But, when it did, WOW, what a sight. Off into the sunset he would ride with his buddy Lee Heath, leaving a gaggle of little kids staring in his dust. Richard's life-long love of motorcycles continued thru motocross races with his son Rick and a final 2600 mile trip to Sturgis, South Dakota for THE rally. Never one to mince words, he'd tell you what he thought, politically correct or not. (Mostly not!) Boyfriends feared him, girlfriends loved him, younger men envied him, husbands hated him. He was a tough guy with a soft heart. He knew no gray, only black and white; right or wrong. The eternal optimist – yes, he bought the “Miracle Trees” guaranteed to grow roof high in one year, advertised on the back of the Sunday magazine. Richard and his second wife, Peg, faithfully helped his daughter Cindy in her journey with cancer which took her in 2005. They also took great care of his mother, Millie, until it was her time to pass. For this we will be forever grateful. Richard enjoyed a wonderful relationship with his neighbors on the north side of Brewster and had many fond memories of block parties and trips with Kenny Smith and his family. His daily walk down Brewster Lake Road with his Shar Pei puppies was a ritual; it was a fitting end to be taken at such a familiar place.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Millie (Vukovich) Lutes; his first wife, Marlene (Brahler) Lutes; and his daughter, Cynthia McDonough. He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Loy) Lutes, the love of his life. We thank her for her kind and loving care of our Dad through several illnesses these last few years. Richard also leaves behind his children; Debra (Ernie) Lehman and Rick (Tamara) Lutes of Navarre; step-son, Rick Richards of Bluefield, W.Va.; grandchildren: Molly, Elizabeth and Ernie Lehman; Patrick and Shannon McDonough; Chase and Liberty Lutes; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Keilah McDonough.
Per Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to the Stark or Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
