Robert ‘Bob' Eugene Mason 1922-2017
Died peacefully in his sleep June 29 at The Lodge at New Dawn two weeks after celebrating his 95th birthday. Bob was born in Canton on June 14, 1922 to Oscar and Phronie (Myers) Mason. Bob graduated from Canton Township High School in 1941 and worked at Hercules before purchasing his long-time business, Mason's Grocery on Waynesburg Road which he operated for 33 years. Bob also owned and operated Mason Realty for 40+years. Bob enjoyed a long, successful second career in the Oil & Gas business working for Belden Blake, Great Lakes Energy and Rex Resources. A stroke forced him to relunctantly retire at age 86! In his younger years he enjoyed hunting at ‘Manor Hill', the infamous hunting cabin at Pennsylvania. He was one of the founders of Little League in Stark County and was proud of the accomplishments achieved by his former players as adults. He was a 40+year season ticket holder for Canton South football and basketball before changing his allegiance to the Northwest Indians for 30 years. Kathy and he were known for their ‘gas-butts' and dining out. They loved traveling and visited every state except Alaska. He enjoyed cheering on the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Kathryn Valentine Mason; and his daughters, Jill (Charlie) Miller and Marcia (Ray) Brinkman. He's also survived by the Nickles and Raber families; sister-in-law, Margie Valentine; friends, Chuck and Sally Morrison; the Moreira family; grandchildren and their families; and his feline buddy, Lou. He was proceeded in death by his daughter, Lynn Meyers (Paul) and brother–in-law, Robert Valentine.
