Robert R. Van Almen 1933-2017
83, passed away on October 3, 2017. He was born on October 13, 1933, the son of the late Robert and Loretta Van Almen. He attended Canton McKinley High School and graduated from Canton Lincoln High School. Bob's greatest influence was his beloved grandfather, Edward Van Almen, who inspired him to always be kind, caring, loving and charitable to others. Bob was inducted into the Stark County Amateur Basketball Association, Greater Canton Old Timers Fast Pitch Association, Greater Canton Aquatics Association, Greater Canton Fumbleball Association and Canton Police Boys Club/J. Babe Stearn Center Hall of Fames. He was a founding Trustee of the Greater Canton Aquatics Association and had over 70 years involvement in Stark County aquatics as a former AAU National Record Holder, YMCA State Champion, Age Group and High School coach, official and strong supporter of swimming and diving at the local, state and national level. He was an executive board member of the Greater Canton Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and a proud member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club.
He will be most remembered for his unconditional love and dedication to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ed Van Almen. Bob is survived by his loving family, his wife and best friend of 43 years, Marilyn Van Almen; children, Taryn (Gary) Boswell, Robin Valdez, R.J. (Abby) Van Almen and Heather (Tony) Sylvester; grandchildren, Romy, Rowan, Sophie, Sylvie, Roman, Sidnie and Saddie; mother and father in-law, Melvin and Evalyne Hull; brothers and sisters in-law, Bill (Cathy) Hull, Phyllis Horner, Trisha Vie, Janet (Robert) Legg, Debra Hull, Sandy Anderson, Rick (Susan) Hull and Roger Hull.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Reed Funeral Home (NORTH CANTON CHAPEL) 801 Pittsburg Ave NW. The family is planning a celebration of Bob's life that will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations may be made in Bob's name
