Roy Emerson Groom 1936 - 2018
On May 23, 2018, Roy Emerson Groom, age 81, celebrated his salvation by meeting with his Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven. Roy was surrounded by his loving children and sister during his final time here on Earth at Mercy Medical Center.
Roy was born on Aug. 16, 1936 to Velma C. (Snyder) and Emerson H. Groom. He graduated from Middlebranch High School in 1954 and attended First Congregation Church and later First Christian Church. He worked as a baker at Laverne's and Litty's Bakeries. Later he owned his own bakery in Wellsville, Ohio. He went on to become a pilot, and he dearly loved flying acrobats. He taught flying lessons at Harry Clever Airfield in New Philadelphia, Ohio. In addition, he taught ground school at Kent State Campus in New Philadelphia. He went on to work for Brentco Aerial Company flying utility lines in Michigan. He loved to take family members and friends on plane rides and scaring them with stalls and spins. He was a Captain of the Civil Air Patrol where he served as a flight instructor. He loved making people laugh, constantly teasing, joking and smiling.
He has many dear close friends among them Steve and Jim Litty, Paul Giannoble and J. R. Legg.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harold, Thomas, Richard "Dick" and Paul Groom; son William Scott "Bill" Groom. He is survived by his sister Shirley Caldwell; children Debra Wuertz (Dennis) Proper, Paula Berry, Jeffery "Jem" Groom, Sara (Stephen "Doc") Johnson and Kara McCullough; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family of Roy Groom express their great appreciation to the staff of Canton Christian Home for their compassion and care.
