Sherwood G. "Woody" Shirk Obituary
Sherwood (Woody) G. Shirk 1924-2017
Age 92, of North Canton, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Aultman Hospital. One of two children, Woody was born in Canton, Ohio on October 22, 1924 to his late parents Belva and Adam Shirk. Woody graduated from Lehman High School in 1942 and then attended Ohio State University for one year prior to being drafted. In World War II he served as a tank commander and platoon sergeant for 39 months with the 36th Tank Battalion, 8th Armored Division, in the European Theater. Always a horse lover, Woody adopted a black mare named Midnight while in the service. Together they won first place in a horse jumping contest and were presented with a blue ribbon and silver plate by General Patton. In 1948 Woody married the love of his life, Frances (Frannie) Theiss. He graduated from Kent State in 1950, and soon began his career at the Hoover Company where he ultimately retired as the General Distribution Manager after 38 years of service. Woody was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and a charter and life member of the BPOE 2029 Lodge. He and Fran enjoyed 40 fun-filled years as members of Oakwood Country Club, where his father was one of the twelve charter members. He was a former president of the Stark County Personnel Association, board member of the North Canton YMCA, Trade and Industry chairman for the American Cancer Society, and volunteer at the North Canton Medical Foundation. Woody was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a loving, generous, appreciative and witty man, who was a gracious host and often the life of the party. He always exemplified a strong work ethic along with a great sense of humor. Throughout his life, Woody enjoyed travel, sports, playing cards and most importantly spending time with family and friends. Woody will be greatly missed and live forever in our hearts.
Woody was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years and best friend, Frances Shirk; and sister, Madge Schlemmer. He is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Todd) Jagger, and Susan (Jeffrey) Eastman; and two sons, David (Darlene) Shirk and Thomas (Lori) Shirk. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, and Rachel Eastman and Lindsay and Adam Shirk; and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Woody's wishes, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 415 South Main Street, North Canton, OH 44720, or to The Salvation Army. A special thank you from the family to the wonderful staff at The Inn at Whitewood Village and prior loving caregivers. You may sign the guest book at: shriverfuneralhomes.com.
