In 1977 he started a tree farm business in Carrollton which he owned until his retirement in 2004. During Ronald Reagan's presidency, one of Virgil's prize Christmas trees was chosen to be sent and displayed at the White House. Virgil loved to watch flowers, vegetables and trees grow. Following his retirement, Virgil enjoyed traveling and visited many countries. He was a member of Beech Mennonite Church, American Legion Post #548 and the Louisville Eagles.
