William J. Burkett
William Junior Burkett 82, died in Massillon, Ohio on Sept. 24th at the age of 82. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Cora Mae (Spiegel) and William Henry Burkett. He was the youngest of the four "Burkett Boys" and was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Dale, and Paul.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Kay LaVonne Kaiser of 59 years. They were married on June 22, 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown, Ohio. Bill is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kay of Massillon; sons, Jeff of Bowling Green, and David (Amy) Burkett of Massillon; grandsons, Trevor (Ali) and Brock Burkett both of Massillon, and six nieces and three nephews.
Bill was born in Navarre, Ohio on May 26, 1935. He graduated from Beach City High School in 1953 where he played varsity basketball, and then joined the United States Marine Corps where earned the rank of corporal and served for 3 years. Ashland College was his next stop where he met Kay and graduated in 1960 with a degree in Education. He later attended the University of Akron and earned a master's degree in Educational Administration. His first teaching position was in Clark, Ohio where he served as a 5th grade teacher, basketball coach, and principal for four years. He then moved to the Tuslaw Local School District where he served for 26 years in a variety of positions at all four of the elementary schools at the time – Moffitt Heights, Myers, Newman, and North Lawrence – either as a 5th grade classroom teacher, physical education teacher, or principal. Besides teacher, Bill enjoyed many other roles throughout his life: husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, grandfather, euchre and pinochle card shark, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church member, story teller, photographer, camper, 53-year Tuslaw Lions Club member, morel mushroom hunter, cancer survivor, coach, friend of the Amish, baseball scorekeeper, salesman, and of course - expert napper. If you knew Bill, the legacy of his kindness, loyalty, and diligent support of his family are compelling qualities for those who would do his life justice.
Visitation with family members will take place Sunday, Oct. 1st from 4 to 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 4275 Lincoln Way NW, Massillon, OH 44647 immediately followed by a service of memorial with the Rev. Katie Jacob, presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Tuslaw Lions Club and mailed to PO Box 273 Massillon, OH 44648 or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 4275 Lincoln Way NW, Massillon, OH 44647.
