Thomas E. Stokes Jr. Obituary
Thomas E.
Stokes Jr.
87, a beloved husband of 68 years, respected father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The Lord chose to call him home on Sunday, March 16, 2014. "Blessed Assurance, all is at rest, I am with my Savior and I am happy and blessed." He was born May 17, 1926 to Thomas E. Stokes Sr. and Ethel May (King) in Canton, Ohio, where he lived his entire life. He was married to Myrtle C. (Gardner) Stokes on Oct. 19, 1946. Thomas was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for 60 years and served in various positions. He was dedicated to working for the church and was often seen painting, doing minor repairs and cutting the shrubs and lawn. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a former member of the Masons and American Legion. Thomas worked for the Hoover Company for 20 years, retired from the United States Post Office after 30 years and then became a security guard for 10 years. Still not ready to completely retire, and after not being able to find employment, at the age of 82, he filed for unemployment benefits.....and it was granted! Thomas enjoyed fishing with his son and grandson, bowling with his buddies, seeking the golden ticket with his daughter, designing Tiffany glass panels for his family and conversations with all who would listen.
Thomas leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Myrtle C. (Gardner) Stokes; daughters, Ethel (Blair) Young of Alliance, Wanda (Melvin) Lenzy of Canton and Jannetta Stokes of Canton; his son, Thomas E. Stokes III of Canton; grandchildren, Tanya McLeod of Akron, Bradley Young of Toledo, Melvin C. Lenzy of Tigard, Ore., Cherjanet Lenzy of Henderson, Nev., Susan Wheeler of Newport News, Va., Anthony Williams and Reynold Williams of Canton; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and his niece, Shirley Green of Canton. He was preceded in death by his son, Nathaniel Stokes; beloved mother-in-law, Mae Gardner; brothers, James (Casey), Sydney, Herbert, Roderick and Ernest; and his sister, Katherine Willis.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 700 Market Ave. S., Canton, OH 44702. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. on Friday in the church. Those wishing, may sign the on-line guestbook at
