Gary L. Smith
age 71, of Brewster went Home to be with his Lord Friday, April 18, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at the Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center, following a seven month battle with cancer. He was born in Canton, Dec. 24, 1942, son of the late Donald G. and Geraldine M. (Mead) Smith. Gary married Wanda M. Whitmer Jan. 27, 1962. They celebrated 48 years of marriage before her death, April 3, 2010. Gary retired from the Timken Company in 1992. He then owned and operated Gary Smith Trucking Company for several years. He was a member of Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church in Navarre where he served as a Trustee, was a member of the Administrative Board and served on several mission teams. Gary volunteered his time in many community groups including the Athletic Complex Team for Fairless High School. He used his gifts and abilities to help many people.
Gary is survived by a daughter, Anita (Randy) Janson of Brewster; and a son, Gary T. (JoAnn) Smith of Canton; grandsons, Clay (Lauren) Janson of Dublin, Ohio, Cory Janson of Brewster, Greg Smith (Monique Anderson, fiance) of Canton, and Timmy Smith of Canton; brothers, Don (Carol) Smith of Magnolia and Jeff (M. Joan) Smith of North Canton; sister, Barb (Tom) Cannell of Dade City, Fla.; mother-in-law, Mildred L. Whitmer; and friend, Kendel Croston.
Cremation has taken place and a private burial will be in Union Lawn Cemetery in Navarre. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church in Navarre with Pastor Dave West officiating. Following services there will be a time of fellowship in Smith Hall at the church.
