81, of Massillon, passed away quietly on Saturday evening, May 3, 2014. Born Oct. 4, 1932, a son to the late Erle L. and Helen M. (Sprinkle) Custer, Gene graduated from Massillon Washington High School with the Class of 1950, and began undergraduate studies at Kent State University, receiving his degree in Business Administration from The University of Colorado Boulder and completing his MBA at Stanford University. Following service in the US Army, Gene embarked on a 35-year career as a human resource professional with corporations that included Bekins Van Lines, Inc., Capital Group, Hughes Aircraft Co., Wadsworth Laboratory of Canton, and Custer Management. While living in California, he also taught for several years at UCLA and Cal Tech.
Predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jack Custer; Gene is survived by his children, Katharine (Chris) Schutza, of Phoenix, Ariz., Bryan (Theresa) Custer, of Creston, Calif. and Greg (Inger) Custer, of Burbank, Calif.. There are also seven grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Jo (Custer) (Ken) Blum, of Louisville, OH, and his fiancée, Patricia Roan, of Massillon.
Funeral services with burial to follow will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014, in Rose Hill Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Massillon. There are no calling hours. Additional details and the on-line guest registry can be found at
