Lovie (Owens)
the daughter of Robert and Effie Owens was born on April 1, 1941 in Canton, Ohio. She went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2014, after a brief illness. Lovie was united in Holy Matrimony to Kenneth B. Williams on Feb. 11, 1961. To this union was born two children, Monique and Kenneth II. Lovie accepted the Lord at an early age at St. Paul AME Church where she was a director of the youth choir, a member of the Missionary Board, and taught Vacation Bible School. After marriage, Lovie united with Asbury AME Church where she served as YPD Director, became a member of the Mass Choir, and hosted Asbury Chapel's first Vacation Bible School. Lovie remained a faithful member of Asbury AME Church until her illness. Lovie graduated from McKinley High School in 1959. While at McKinley, she participated in the Candy Striper program at Aultman Hospital. Lovie went on to receive certification as a Surgical Technician and worked in this capacity for many years serving at several hospitals in the Canton, Massillon, and Columbus areas.
In 1969, Lovie began a career at Hartford Junior High School where she started working as a Hall Monitor and was then placed in charge of the math and computer labs. While at Hartford, Lovie started the Walk of Fame which honored students' accomplishments. She also began Student Banking, teaching students the importance of making sound financial decisions. Lovie volunteered for many years at the Canton Urban League where she tutored math for neighborhood children. Lovie also typed for students in college, typing at least one person's practicum for her Doctorate degree. Lovie served on the South Market Elementary School Reunion Committee bringing teachers and students back together again.
Lovie was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Effie Owens; husband, Kenneth Williams; grandmother, Amy Phillips Austin; sisters, Arthelma Guthrie and Shirley Williams; nephew, Larry Owens; aunt, Jewell Chinn; father and mother-in-law, Felder and Velia Williams; sister-in- law, Melinda Ann Williams; and brothers-in-law, Howard and Theodore Williams. Lovie leaves to cherish her memory, son, Kenneth B. Williams II; daughter, Monique (Brian) Chaney; grandson, Brian K. Chaney II (Pumpskin); brothers, Clarence Owens and Michael (Shirley) Owens; special sister-in-law, Donna Jean Williams; special friends, Delores (Bush) Hammond, Brenda Hatchett, Gladys Freeman, Dorothy Pullin, Kay Francis Frazier; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 12 p.m. in Asbury Chapel AME Church, 8771 Greer Ave. SE in Waynesburg. Calling hours will be held two hours prior from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Interment will be in Sandy Valley Cemetery.
