Wardell Manuel Sumpter
Age 73, of East Canton, went on to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010. He was born on April 13, 1937, in Alliance, to the late Wardell and Zelma Sumpter. Wardell was a graduate of McKinley High School and went on to serve our country proudly in the United States Army. He retired from The Timken Company after 41 years of service. Wardell was a member and former deacon of the Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ for many years. Wardell and his whistling will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Mercy Homecare and Mercy Hospice for their outstanding care and kindness.
In addition to his parents, Wardell was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Dianne Wilder; and brother, James Edward Sumpter. He is survived by his wife, Faith (Walker) Sumpter, to whom he was married 50 wonderful years; four sons, Wardell Edward (Cynthia) Sumpter of Canton, Alfonso Scott (JoAnne) Sumpter of Lenexa, Kan., Jeffrey Lynn Sumpter I of Akron and Michael Anthony Sumpter of Canton; a grandson that Wardell and Faith raised, Jeffrey Lynn Sumpter II; sister, Cortie Blair of Canton; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one expected great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at 12 p.m. in the Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ (718 Henrietta Ave. N.E., Canton, OH 44704) with Pastor Olee Nuckles officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. in the church.
