Ronald L. Stokes
son of James and Ruth Stokes, was born Jan. 10, 1944 in Canton, Ohio. He peacefully departed this life on Aug. 9, 2013 following an extended illness. Ronald was a 1961 graduate of McKinley Senior High School. After high school, he served in the U.S Air Force from 1962-1966. He was an employee at the Timken Company from 1966-1999, where he served as the first African-American President of Local 1123 from 1994-1997, and retired after 33 years of service. Ronald was an avid golfer and he also loved tennis, hunting, fishing, photography, and bowling. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family, especially his eight grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Lela Fisher; mother and father, James and Ruth Stokes; and brother, Jonathan Stokes; and first born child, Roderick. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife, Gloria; children, Rahman (Michele) of Canton, Ohio, Kodjo of Canton, Ohio and special friend, Nancy Morin, of Columbus, Ohio, Gabrielle of Canton, Ohio, Celeste, (Ryan) Smith, of Canton, Ohio, Cecily, of Los Angeles, Calif. and Natalie of Columbus, Ohio. The family would also like to make special mention to Richard Kifutu for his devoted care in his last days. Grandchildren, Zharyea, Akil, Tajonet, KiaLyn, Amir, Taylon, Leilah, and Tarie. Brothers, Norman Stokes of Dallas, Texas, Kevin (Kathy) Stokes, of Canton, Ohio, Derek (Lisa) Stokes, of Leesburg, Ga., Jeremy (Jill) Stokes of New Albany, Ohio. Sisters, Marsha Stokes (Hall) of Massillon, Ohio, Linda Stokes of Canton, Ohio, Jennifer Manigo of Massillon, Ohio, and Deidre K. Stokes Davis of Canton, Ohio. A total of 50+ nieces and nephews who loved and adored their Uncle 'Ronnie.', and a host of other relatives and devoted friends.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 12 noon in Sherrick Road Church of God. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m.- 12 noon. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
