Walter Nist Obituary
89 years young, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. He was born July 19, 1924 to the late Howard H. and Eva M. Nist. A graduate of St. John's High School, Class of 1942, Canton; attended Walsh College. Staff Sergeant 418 Army Corp Engineers World War II. Member Knights of Columbus, Elks, Moose, American Legion Ohio Post 44. Past President of Toastmasters Club 637 (Canton), Founder of Council for Retarded Children (ARC) Stark County where he served as the first President. Co-owner Flanagan & Nist Paint Co., Canton, Ohio; retired Industrial Sales Manager Binks Manufacturing Company, Franklin Park, Ill. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a kind and wise man and his righteous ways were admired and will be missed. He loved music and in his earlier years was the manager and trumpet player of Walt Nist & His Orchestra jazz band. He joins his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Alice Nist (Busse), daughters Bonita and Susan Nist; brothers, Howard P. Nist and Martin H. Hunker and sister Wilma Seikel.
He is survived by his children, Charles (Susan) Nist, Robert (Deborah) Nist, Marilyn (Scott) Pletcher, Thomas (Joanne) Nist and Loraine (Peter) Walter; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather to honor his life on Monday May 12, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. A short prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday May 13, 2014 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 726 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton, Ohio, Fr Edward Beneleit, Pastor, celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Massillon, Ohio. The family asks that any memorial contributions be made to ARC of Stark County, 6900 Market Avenue North Canton, Ohio 44721. Please visit www.schoedinger.com to send condolences and share memories.
