Mark Vincent Hurley, 75, of Evergreen died suddenly of heart failure on Oct. 18, 2012.
He is survived by four children, Shawn (Celeste) of Grand Junction, Kate of Louisville, Will (Maria) of North Carolina, and Neil of Evergreen; six grandchildren; and three siblings, Carol Law of Encinitas, Calif., Regina Breiel of Chillicothe, Ohio, and L. Keith Hurley of Coconut Creek, Fla. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen; his parents; a sister, Doris Spetnagel; and two brothers, Basil and Harold Hurley.
Mark was born on a farm in Ross County, Ohio, on Jan. 26, 1937, to Irene and William Hurley. He graduated from Chillicothe (Ohio) High School and Ohio University. He served with the U.S. Army Occupied Forces in Japan. He moved to Evergreen in 1970, helped build his own mountain home, and began a long career with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Denver.
Mark was an active sportsman. He loved hiking, skiing and most every sport, especially baseball. He played with a local softball league for a number of years.
Mark was a man of sterling character. If he committed to a project or to help a friend or neighbor, you could rely on him to be there to the very end. He loved the Rocky Mountains, and most of all living in Evergreen with its scenic winter landscape and the summer Jazz Festival and fun. During his last years, he attended local events with a very special friend, Lori Greenwood. He talked often of how much he valued his friendship with her.
Services are pending at Christ the King Catholic Church in Evergreen, with burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

I graduated from high school a semester early and my Mom (Carol Law, Mark's sister) decided to send me to Colorado to get me out of her hair. I stayed with Uncle Mark and the kids for about a month. Uncle Mark took me sking a couple times. The first trip was to Vail, it was so beautiful. Mark was a good skier and he tried like heck to teach me, but it was useless. I ended up taking lessons in the afternoon, but that did really work either. The bottom line - I suck at skiing. In the evening we went out to dinner and I got to order my 1st drink at a bar. At that time you could drink at 18 in a few states. I have great memories of Uncle Mark and the Hurley family. I will miss his gentle ways - he was a sweet man.

Dear Mark Hurley Family,
My most vivid memory of my Uncle Mark is from 1987, when my husband Jim (boyfriend at the time) and I came to Evergreen for a visit and Mark took us to the Little Bear Bar to listen to some music. The Little Bear was an experience of its own, but experiencing it with Uncle Mark made it even more memorable. He knew a lot of people in Evergreen and it seemed like a lot of them were in the Little Bear that Sunday afternoon, which made it an interesting day. I also remember his visits to California when I was a kid, and seeing him in Chillecothe in the summers and he always loved to joke and tease all of us. He always sent us a Christmas card and cut-outs from newspaper articles that he thought we would find interesting (my mom, Carol, does that also, it must be a Hurley thing.) I will remember him as a very kind man, who loved to talk about his children and enjoyed a good conversation. He will be missed.

This photo taken Chillicothe, OH July 4, 1996. We were back from CO and CA for CHS all-class reunion and to visit our sisters, Doris and Regina. Mark was perfectly willing to wear a lady hat if that's all there was to protect him from the bright Ohio sun. Mark had many Ohio friends and seldom had the time to visit all of them. He was a unique and noble man, with a wry sense of humor. I am proud to have had him as a brother.

My condolences to all the Hurley family especially Keith and Regina. Bob Houser just called and told me of Mark's passing. It seems like just yesterday we were in the driveway playing basket ball and when Mark was there noone else could keep up.

Mark was a terrific uncle to my sister and me as we were growing up. I especially remember Mark taking us swimming and he and I throwing the baseball in Trotwood. Mark was a big Ohio U. football fan and he, my Dad and I went to several games together.
Mark had a quiet dignity about him and I admired him and will miss im very much.

A sibling relationship is probaly the longest one you ever have. We even lived in the same apartment complex in Dayton after college. Many memorable years of good times. Mark had many friends growing up and was always a hard worker and very active. He was a great brother, son, uncle, and friend. He continued that raising his family. We are all really going to miss him. He was fiercely proud and unfailingly responsible. He will leave a hugh void in my life along with wonderful memories. Sister Regina Breiel

Its wonderful to hear the stories of my Father-In-Law as a young man. I have only known Mark for 7 years, but felt that he was a wonderful Father to my Husband Will. I remember the great stories that Mark would tell like how he was too shy to escort Japan's Miss Universe, how he played with a famous basketball player in a pick up game, and other stories that let you know that he wasn't going to take bull from anyone!. My Husband has fond memories of special times with his Dad at YMCA summer camp, hiking, fishing and baseball games. Mark was a kind Grandpa. He will be missed by our whole family.

As Mark's nephew, Mark always took time to entertain my sister and I as we were growing up. I remember Mark taking us swimming at Aters lake and Gold Cliff. I have always looked up to Mark and will miss him very much.

So sorry to hear of the sudden loss of Uncle Mark. I have many wonderful memories of him. He was always our "cool" uncle.During the 60's he drove a woody stationwagon that the surfers drove. He would take my brother and I swimming. When I was in college he had a GTO that he would let me borrow. Always so generous.. he took me to wonderful restaurants to eat when I was in college.
In the past 6 years, I loved to visit him on my trips to Denver. We would have lunch at a restarant on the lake in Evergreen... always beautiful scenery to dine by. I know why he loved it there so much.
We will all miss you!
