Paul Gerhard Schmidt III, a successful explorer and geologist, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2013, in Lakewood.
Paul began his career with expeditions to Antarctica, where a glacier was named after him. He is credited with discovering major ore deposits across the United States. He was an outdoorsman and hunter, and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Paul was also very active with Habitat for Humanity and Lutheran Church of the Cross in Evergreen.
Paul was born on Aug 6, 1934, in Granite Falls, Minn.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, of Evergreen; brother John (Molly) Schmidt of Litchfield, Minn., and sister Susan (Jon) Nymo of Cable, Wis.; daughters Maja Haloway and Melaura (Dan) Schmidt Duncan; son Paul (Julaine) G. Schmidt IV; six grandchildren, Daniel Albers, Benjamin Albers, Walter (Kelli) Duncan, Astri Duncan, Paul G. Schmidt V, Ryan Schmidt; and great-granddaughter Sofi Jean Duncan.
Funeral services took place last week at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Evergreen. A memorial service and burial will take place in Granite Falls, Minn., at a later date.
