Chester Fredrick Hicks, a lifelong resident of Evergreen, passed peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2018, at home from natural causes at the age of 92.
Chester was born on July 12, 1925, in Evergreen to Earl E. Hicks and Lillian A. Hicks. He graduated from Evergreen High School in the class of 1943. Shortly after graduation, along with his two elder brothers, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 23, 1943. Chester served in the Third Army, 80th Infantry Division, which landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Chester fought heroically and was decorated with three Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart.
In 1939 while in the eighth grade, he met the love of his life, Gwen Massey (Wilson). On a three-day pass from military service, Chester and Gwen were married on July 6, 1945. Upon Chester's return from military service, they settled down and started their family. Chester devoted the rest of his life to supporting and caring for his family. He worked in the family business, Hicks & Sons, and later Hicks Brothers Excavation and Construction.
Chester was humble, loving, compassionate, courageous and patriotic. He was a devoted husband and a loving father. All those who knew him were truly blessed because of his loving kindness and his charismatic personality. He enjoyed skating on the lake, hunting, music, dancing and working hard "building roads."
Chester is survived by his two grandchildren, Aaron Hathaway and Adrianne Marez. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen Hicks, on June 16, 2015, and two daughters, Sherri Hathaway and Mary Hicks. There are six great-grandchildren: Dominic, Amanda, Christopher, Jessica, Audianna and Gauge; and three great-great-grandchildren: Phenix, Gracie and Nixon.
A funeral Mass will be on Wednesday March 21, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4291 Evergreen Parkway, Evergreen.
