Erika Joy Schumacher, formerly of Evergreen, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at her home in Denver.
Erika was born March 27, 1975, in Rochester, N.Y., to Wolf and Joy Schumacher and was raised in Evergreen. She attended Bergen Elementary, Evergreen Junior High and graduated from Evergreen High School in 1993. She graduated from Colorado State University and later attended the University of Denver to earn her master's degree in social work.
Erika was a beautiful person who loved unconditionally and was a friend to everyone she met. She had a gift of making you feel cared for, loved and like the most important person in the world.
She also impacted people she didn't know as a grief counselor for multiple Denver area hospitals. Working tirelessly, Erika would comfort and counsel those in their greatest time of need. It is truly inestimable to know the number of lives she impacted and made better. She has left her legacy well beyond this life, as she has taught her friends and family how to love unconditionally, deeply and forever.
As a mother, wife, daughter and sister, very few things made her happier than spending long hours playing board games, singing karaoke and just being silly with her family and friends. Erika kept friends since childhood and made new ones along the way, enjoying life through snowboarding, hiking, concerts and long conversations.
Erika is survived by her parents, Wolf and Joy Schumacher of Evergreen; husband Mark Mellinger; 4-year-old daughter Bergen Schumacher; and sisters Tanya Schumacher Lopez and Robin Schumacher. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her. May her spirit and memory continue to be a beacon of light for those who knew her.
A celebration of life service to honor Erika will be held Sunday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Inn at Hudson Gardens, 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton.
If you wish to donate, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Erika's family at www.gofundme.com/help-for-bergen-and-mark.
