Jewell Huckaby, 89, of Highland's Ranch, Evergreen, Osage City, Kan., Robinson, Kan., and Nevada, Mo., passed peacefully into the arms of God from Mill Vista Lodge at Wind Crest Retirement Community on Sunday evening, July 16.
Born in Nevada, Mo., to Sarah Henryetta (Moore) Huckaby and Jewel Jasper Huckaby, Jewell Jr. attended Nevada schools and went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees in music education at the University of Kansas. He taught music in Evergreen, Osage City and Robinson.
He married his high school sweetheart, Carlene Summy, on March 28, 1948, on Easter Sunday morning.
He is survived by his children, Cheryl Colson (Leif), Larry Huckaby (Donna), Randy Huckaby (Martha) and daughter-in-law Dawne Huckaby, and was predeceased by son Lon Huckaby and Ronald Huckaby. He also leaves his eight beloved grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jewell (an appropriate name) was cherished, loved and admired by family, friends, peers, the communities he lived in and the students he taught. Jewell sang the melody of his life for all the world to hear, and the duet with the love of his life was most harmonious. Together, their song lasted for 72 years and will carry on through Carlene until she is united with him once again in heaven.
A memorial service will be at Evergreen Christian Church, 27772 Iris Drive, Evergreen, CO 80439, on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jewell's name to: Evergreen Christian Church, P.O. Box 427, Evergreen, CO, 80437.
