John A. "Rod" Kershenstein, 93, of Evergreen, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. to be reunited with love of his life, Margaret "Peg."
Born in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of John and Elizabeth Kershenstein. Rod was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather with an immense love for his country and family. His priority was always his family's well-being.
Rod was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, having the distinction of serving on active duty in World War II in the European theater, including participating in the D-Day Invasion as a combat engineer soldier and in the Army Reserve as an armor officer, achieving the rank of first lieutenant.
He was always driven to succeed and provide for his family. Upon completion of his military service, he embarked on 32-year business career and worked as a salesman, sales manager and a business executive for Westinghouse, ITT, Continental Baking Corp. and MCI.
During his business career, he served in a variety of overseas assignments in Europe and Latin America as well in the continental United States. His endearing personality led to many friendships, lasting impressions and wonderful memories.
A big believer in education and career progression, Rod completed a number of training courses throughout his life to include being fluent in Spanish. He was a humble man of simple ways.
Family get-togethers and the community pig roasts that he and Peg hosted were filled with laughter, gifts and plenty of food for all, where he was known for his "eat more" comments.
A leader in the community, he provided advice to help local merchants and restaurants increase their markets and clientele - a skill that was always greatly appreciated.
A man of faith, Rod was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Evergreen. He was a charitable man throughout his life. Rod cherished family time, especially family vacations as well as watching the Broncos and the Rockies.
Rod was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, the former Margaret "Peg" Dinsmore, and brother Jim.
Surviving are his sister, June Koeppen; sons Kim and Kent; daughter-in-law Barbara; grandchildren Richard and Lisa; and great-grandchildren Isla and Mina.
A celebration of life memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Evergreen, 3757 Ponderosa Drive, Evergreen. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
