William "Bill" Robert Campbell of Evergreen died May 18, 2017, at home.
In recognition of Bill's wish to further understand his illness, his family has donated his body to Parkinson's research. In lieu of flowers, Bill's family requests that memorials be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Bill Campbell was born Feb. 7, 1942, in Roanoke, Va., the son of John Earl Campbell and Mary Augusta (Corum) Campbell. Bill earned his bachelor of science degree in biology and his master's in entomology, with a toxicology specialty, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.
In 1969, he married N. Elaine Weigle in Champagne, Ill. Shortly after their marriage, Bill earned his doctorate in entomology and toxicology from the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana. In 1970, the couple moved to Indiana, where Bill served as an assistant professor of entomology at Purdue University.
In 1975, Bill accepted a position as a research specialist with the agricultural division of CIBA-GEIGY in Florida; in 1979, the family moved to Jamestown, N.C., when CIBA-GEIGY promoted Bill to senior toxicologist.
As an expert in animal health drug safety, Bill later designed and supervised clinical studies for Blue Ridge Pharmaceuticals and Piedmont Pharmaceuticals in North Carolina.
Upon retirement, Bill and Elaine moved to Colorado, where Bill took joy in the mountain views and in living near family.
Those left to honor Bill's memory include his wife, Elaine Campbell, of Evergreen; four daughters, Meredith (and Sarah) Campbell of Denver, Adrienne (and Mark) Manson of Pine, Robin (and Joe) Montello of Rural Hall, N.C and Teresa Rickles of Kernersville, N.C.; two granddaughters Mitike Campbell and Samantha Rickles; and three great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Michael.
