Frank Dudley Obituary

DUDLEY, JR., FRANK SIMMS, 93, of Queenstown, died peacefully on March 3 surrounded by loving family at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Born in Baltimore on December 9, 1919, he was the only child of the late Frank S. Dudley and Edith Shriner. He attended Roland Park Country School and graduated from Gilman School in 1939. He entered the University of Virginia and, after serving in the Navy during WWII, earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1946. He later received his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore and was admitted to the Bar in 1956. That same year, Mr. Dudley opened his real estate appraisal firm, Tidewater Properties in Queenstown, while maintaining his family's Hemsley's Fortune Farm. He earned the prestigious, national designation of MAI from the Appraisal Institute of Real Estate Appraisers in 1968, and built a lifetime career on his strong reputation and expertise of commercial appraisals that were sought after throughout the region by such clients as the Maryland Port Authority. He was a member of American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, the National Association of Realtors, and the MD Association of Realtors for which he was named Realtor of the Year in 1980. He also served on the Queen Anne's County Board of Realtors as its president. He retired from the US Naval Reserve in 1979. Mr. Dudley cared deeply for his community and served on the boards of Memorial Hospital of Easton for a number of years, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum 1978-1990, Horn Point Laboratories and Maryland Agricultural Society for the Eastern Shore. He was an Adjunct Faculty member of Chesapeake Community College and was active in the Queenstown Community Plan and its Citizen Advisory Committee. He was a former member of the Maryland Club, Historical Society of Queen Anne's County, Academy Art Museum, Corsica River Yacht Club and Tred Avon Yacht Club among others. He played lacrosse and sang in the Glee Club in college, was an avid sailor and enjoyed tennis, golf, horseback riding and skiing with his family and many friends well into his 80s. He enjoyed projects in his woodshop and remained active at work until his death. A gentleman farmer and animal lover, he will be remembered for his dedication to his family and community, as well as for the strength of his integrity, honesty and loyalty. Previously married to the late Virginia Wick Ingels in 1947, he is survived by his wife, Lucia Brown Dudley, whom he married in 1985; son, F. Wick Dudley (Lawrie) of Queenstown; son, Peter I. Dudley (Anne) of Baltimore; daughter, Clay D. Evans (Joe) of Annapolis; five grandchildren (Elizabeth, Wickie, Ginny, Abby and Gwyn), as well as six stepchildren and their families. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 201 S. Liberty St., Centreville, MD on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
