Helen Howe

HOWE, HELEN MOODY, died peacefully at her Odenton, MD home on Wednesday morning, December 26, 2012.

She was born in Covington, Kentucky on February 8, 1935, the daughter of Vernelle and Ambrose J. Moody. She graduated from Roanoke Catholic High School in 1952 and enrolled as a Music Major at the College of William & Mary. She interrupted her studies in 1954 upon the death of her mother to care for two younger sisters.

She married James Howe in 1956 and traveled extensively during his more than twenty year Army career, living in Georgia, Kentucky, Colorado, California, Okinawa, North Carolina, Kansas, and Maryland. She resumed her academic studies in 1972 at the University of Baltimore, earning a BA in History in 1975 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1978: She served as General Counsel for the Baltimore District Corps of Engineers for more than fifteen years, culminating her Engineer Corps career as acting District Counsel prior to her retirement in 1996.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James; three sons, J. Gregory (wife Valerie) of Pennington, NJ, Timothy R. (wife Emily) of Ellicott, MD, and Richard J. of Augusta, GA; three grandchildren, Lauren Howe, David Howe, and Lucy Howe; a brother, Donald L. Moody (wife Ruth) of Pittsburgh, PA; two sisters, Dorothy F. Godwin (husband Dr. Gene A. Godwin, MD) of Roanoke, VA and Shirley J. Swim (husband John) of Roanoke, VA.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke, VA on Saturday, December 29, 2012, followed by interment in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Local arrangements by Hardesty Funeral Home P.A., Gambrills, MD.
