Capt. John Oliver Coppedge "Bo" USN (Ret.), 88, a 44-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Norfolk, VA, died December 26 in Annapolis after a 6-month illness.
Born July 26, 1924 in Evadale, Arkansas to the late Shelby William and Iva Thomas Coppedge, Capt. Coppedge was a 1947 graduate of the U.S. Navy
Academy. He also earned a Masters in International Relations in 1963 from George Washington University. He retired as a Captain from the U.S. Naval, serving from 1946-73. While in the Navy, he served on submarines and was recognized for his National Defense Service with a Bronze Star
. From 1968-88, he was the Director of Athletics at the Naval Academy.
Capt. Coppedge was a former chairman of the NCAA Television Committee and a member of the National Association of College Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Annapolis Rotary Club
and Annapolis Yacht Club. He enjoyed Navy sports, spending time with family and traveling.
In addition to his parents, Capt. Coppedge was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Driscoll Coppedge, whom he married in 1948 and who died in 2006 and his son William S. Coppedge.
He is survived by his son, John O. Coppedge, Jr. (and his wife Judy) of Santa, CA; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Coppedge; two grand-daughters, Erin Hoganson and Kelly Coppedge; and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Shelby Hoganson.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 9 at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. Funeral will be 10 a.m., Thursday, January 10 at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel. Interment will follow in the Naval Academy Cemetery.
