Lloyd Layaw

Lloyd Dean Layaw, 89, of NYS Rt. 222 and formerly Potsdam, Dryden, Etna, NY and Florida, died April 22 at the Cortland Memorial Hospital after lengthy illness. Born in Norwood, NY the 10th of eleven children of the late George and Delia Tebo Layaw, Lloyd was raised in Norwood, NY and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Africa. Upon returning home, he married the former C. Jean Sanford of Ithaca, who passed away in 1987. Later he was married to Shirley Barber Clark Layaw, who passed in 2008. Lloyd was employed as a carpenter with Local Union #603 and was a member of the Finger Lakes Post 961, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose and Eagles Lodges. He enjoyed remodeling homes, bowling, his two cats, Frisky and Kilroy, music, playing his guitars and organ as well as and reading, especially his collection of Louis L'Amour books. In addition to his parents and two spouses, Lloyd was predeceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Stein. Survivors include his children, Charlotte Kerns of Annapolis, Susan (Les Sandman) Stein of Ithaca, Victoria Pierce of Ithaca, Pamela (Bernie) White of Groton and Douglas (Lori Bartholomew) of Cortland; brother, Paul Layaw of Potsdam; three step-children, Ronald (Julie) Clark of Ithaca, Richard (Cindy) Clark of McGraw and Sandra (Jerry) Mascho of Oregon; 12 grandchildren; many great and step-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. David H. Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden where military honors will be provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team and members of Finger Lakes Post 961, VFW. Friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday prior to the memorial service and also at a reception at the DVMH after the interment.
