Mary Russell

RUSSELL, MARY RUTH BAKER, passed away in Annapolis, MD on April 10, 2013 at the age of 87. Born May 7, 1925 in Decatur, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Marie Fish and Harold Richard Baker. Mary is preceded in death by her sister, Florence B. Somers. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Thomas C. Russell of 60 years. They were married on October 11, 1952 at the Methodist Church in Decatur, Illinois. Mary is lovingly remembered by her children, Kenneth John (and Roberta) of Gaithersburg, MD, Edward Dwight (and Lizette) of Los Angeles, CA, and Kathleen (and Martin Jackson) of Dunkirk, MD. Mary also has ten grandchildren, Jacqueline, Lauren-Kyle, Michael, Collin, Kenneth, Lacey, Paul, Sarah, Samantha, Robby and four great grandchildren, Kourtney, Sophia, Cayson, and Joel who will miss her joyfulness and encouragement. Mary graduated from Decatur High School in 1944. In Decatur her summer vacations were spent helping migrant workers in Michigan. She attended Black Burn Junior College, and then went on to Washington University School of Nursing to earn her BS degree in December of 1949. She then moved to Chicago, Illinois; worked for the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA), attended the University of Illinois, met Tom, and was married in 1952. They moved to Washington DC where she continued working for the VNA, until her first child, Kenneth was born. She became a homemaker, a lover of art, a painter, and an accomplished quilter. She enjoyed being a den mother, traveling across the country with her family and around the world with her beloved husband, Tom. Mary did extensive Genealogical research on both the Baker and Russell family lines. For forty years, Mary was a member of the Lanham United Methodist Church. When her children went off to college, she worked on completing her Doctorate degree and was employed in the Maryland University Adult Education department for several years. After moving to Heritage Harbour in 1994 she enjoyed her many friendships as she played Mah Jong, cards, did yoga and tai chi and volunteered at the West Street Library for over ten years. A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road Edgewater, MD 21037 from 2-4:00 PM with a service to follow at 4:00 PM. An internment ceremony will be held April 19, 2013 at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at 1:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heartland Hospice Services, 4 East Rolling Crossroads, Suite 307, Catonsville, MD 21228.
