William "Bill" D. Shisler Sr., 85, of Fort Pierce, FL, died April 22, at Treasure Coast Hospice House. Mr. Shisler was born to Clifford (Kip) and Mae (Murray) Shisler on May 9, 1927 in Burlington, New Jersey. His parents relocated to Miami where Kip worked at the Coral Gables Country Club, and later opened a popular restaurant, The Drum, in Coral Gables, FL. The Shisler family lived in a large family residence that included a cottage where his sister Helen and her husband, George Menner, resided. The Shisler residence, widely known as "Three Acres," was located in Coral Gables on S.W. 48th Avenue and Tamiami Trail. Their home was a place of enjoyment for family members and close friends. Bill wed Joan Marie Arace on February 5, 1949 in Miami. Their first son, Michael Clifford, was born in Key West, FL, at the time Bill worked for Florida Power and Light. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy
, and served in World War II
as a radio operator on the U.S.S. San Jacinto, a Navy transport ship. He was later called back for active to duty during the Korean War
. In 1955, he graduated from the University of Miami in Coral Gables with a degree in electrical engineering. Bill began his career in radar and sonar technologies with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA, and their daughter, Julia Mae, was born in Sharon, PA. Later, Bill and his family relocated to Ferndale when Bill began working at the Westinghouse plant in Lansdowne. They welcomed their second son, William Dennis, born in Baltimore. Bill worked at Westinghouse's Chesapeake Bay Bridge Plant near Annapolis, in the 1970s and 1980s. Twenty-seven years ago Bill and Joan retired to Ft. Pierce, FL, and resided at Spanish Lakes. William was an amateur radio enthusiast, and a member of the Vero Beach Amateur Radio Club (W3DHN). He was also a member of the American Legion Post #40, Elks Lodge
#1520, and the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his passion as a ham radio operator, Bill also enjoyed camping and golf. After retiring from Westinghouse, Bill and Joan traveled throughout the U.S. in their Sunstream camper, and Bill played at least one golf course in every state they visited. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen M. Menner of Pt. St. Lucie, FL in 2011. Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan; his son, Dr. Michael C. Shisler and his wife, Joan, of St. Leonard; his son, William (Bill) D. Shisler Jr. and his wife, Roma Diane, of Pisgah, NC; and his daughter, Julie and her husband, Kenneth (Barney) Van Fleet, of San Diego, CA; his grandchildren, Rev. Sara Shisler, Baltimore; Margo Shisler, Charleston, SC; Colin and Evan Shisler of St. Leonard; Jered Whealton of Oak Island, NC; Chelsea Whealton and her husband, Justin Glasscock, Elizabethton, TN. Bill is also survived by his extended family including, Elizabeth (Honey) Schuyler of Miami Springs, FL; Andrew and Ellen Clark, and their son, Drew, Davie, FL; Mary Hernandez, and her sons, Paul and Mark, Miami, FL; Anne and Chuck Ramey, Orange, VA; Jane and Bob Myers, and their children, Joy and Carl; Joan Clark, Palmyra, VA; Nancy and Mike Hamdani, Charlottesville, VA. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Fort Pierce, FL. Interment will be that same day in Flagler Memorial Park in Miami, FL.
