My husband, Joe, especially knew Chet while he headed the tracking station in Santiago; Joe was an Associated Press correspondent in Chile, switching to covering all of South America for U.S. News & World Report magazine after we married there in 1967. We returned to Chile to see how things were going one year after the election of Communist Salvador Allende and met with the Shaddeaus. I remember their cautioning us to be very careful--Americans were not very welcome--or safe--at that time. It was good to read of Chet's valuable career in so many places and functions. His family can be very proud.

Chet was the magnet who as Class Secretary held together the USNA Class of 1947 for decades. Let's express our continued appreciation by supporting his successor. My condolence to his heirs.

Chet and Pat were two of our favorite people socially and at the Union Church of Santiago.
Chet was enormously helpful to me in understanding the role of NASA in Chile and put me in touch with people who were establishing observatories that have made Chile one of the preeminent locations for looking into the Heavens.
He followed the career of our son through Naval ROTC at Rice University and in the 17-plus years since he was commissioned, and was an unfailing source of encouragement.
His periodic letters were filled with humor and insight.
We had hoped for a visit from Chet and his friend, but will have to content ourselves with many warm memories.
