Joseph "Joe" Michael Garvey Jr., 77. died peacefully March 13, surrounded by his family and friends at his long-time home in Severna Park. Born in Baltimore December 21, 1936 to Joseph and Ruth Garvey, Joe was one of four children. He graduated from Mount Saint Joseph's High School where he was a member of the debate team. Joe met his sweetheart, Maria Noel Reinecke, at a CYO dance in Catonsville and they were married June 14, 1958. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in horticulture, Joe went on to serve as captain in the United States Air Force in Florida, Washington and Germany. Joe was the father of six children, Maria, Joseph Michael III, Carl, David, Christopher, and Peter. and the grandfather of 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Joe worked at the National Arboretum, National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, and Melwood Horticultural Training Center. In 1976, Joe started his own contracting firm providing greenhouses and glass structures for both residential and commercial customers. Joe enjoyed sharing his Severn River property with family and friends, fishing, sailing, talking, and relaxing. Always an adventurer, Joe enjoyed traveling with Maria visiting family and friends. He was a parishioner of Saint Bernadette Parish in Severn, Maryland, where he was a lector and floral designer. Joe is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchild, brother, sister, many dear in-laws, nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Viewing is from 2 to 4 .m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, March 16 at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park. A Catholic Mass followed by a celebration of Joe's life will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 18 at Saint Bernadette Parish.
