DOWLING, ELIZABETH VON WELLSHEIM, 91, of Annapolis, MD, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Mrs. Dowling was born in New York City June 5, 1922, the daughter of Eugene Joseph, Baron von Wellsheim, of Austria, and Maria Augusta Lux of Utica, NY. Upon the early death of her father, Mrs. Dowling's family moved to Utica where she was raised. She attended Utica schools and graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Rochester, NY. Mrs. Dowling was married in 1942 to the late William F. Dowling, Jr., retired vice president and general counsel of Burroughs Wellcome Co. At his death in 1997, they had been married 55 years. The family lived in Crestwood, NY; Greenwich, CT; and Raleigh and Long Beach, NC. Mrs. Dowling has lived in Annapolis since 1979. Mrs. Dowling was a past president of the Wardour Garden Club and volunteered at the Annapolis Library, the Anne Arundel Hospital Hospice Program, and Meals on Wheels in Annapolis. Mrs. Dowling was devoted to her husband and eight children, seeing them through good times and bad with steadfast love and support. She was predeceased by her daughters, Gretchen and Elizabeth, her son, Timothy, and her grandson, Michael. Mrs. Dowling was an early advocate of equality in all things for women. She was an artist who loved tennis, long walks, books, museums, and the ocean. She is survived by two sons: William F. III, of Cranberry Island, ME, and Patrick C. of Myrtle Beach, SC; three daughters: Maria Webb of Arnold, MD, Anne Grulich of Aztec, NM, and Margaret Wells of Tampa, FL. There are 9 grandchildren: Jessica, Amanda, Luke, Matthew, Andrew, William, Mary, Michael, and Sofie; and three great grandchildren: Skylar, Evie, and Franklin; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial gathering will be held at Hardesty Funeral Home at 12 Ridgely Avenue, Annapolis, MD on Sunday, May 3 from 10:30-12:30pm.
