Joseph "Joe" Merrill Stehle, 94, an Annapolis resident for 88 years, died June 30 at home from a stroke, following a two year illness. He was born February 7, 1920 in Washington, DC., and graduated from Annapolis High School. A veteran, Joe was a Sergeant in WW II, serving in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator in the European Theater. He was employed by NSA for 43 years. Joe was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Knights of Columbus. In addition to being an Orioles fan, he enjoyed golf, baseball, tennis, and football. Collecting U.S. Postage First Daycovers was his hobby. Married to his beloved wife for 45 years, Leah A. Stehle, she preceded him in death August 11, 1991. He was also predeceased by his son, Scott Stehle on July 4, 2003. Joe is survived by his son, Kirk Stehle of Annapolis, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 7, at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, at St. Mary's Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
