Dr. Francis Michael Kopack, 84, a resident of Annapolis for 49 years, died peacefully November 14 with family by his side. Dr. Kopack graduated Cum Laude from the University of Scranton, PA in 1950. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA in 1954. He completed his pediatric residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Kopack was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1964 after serving as a pediatrician for eight years. During his time, he served as Chief of Pediatrics at Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, VA and in his last duty station he served as Chief of Pediatrics at Bassett Army Hospital in Fort Wainwright, AK. After retiring from the Army, Dr. Kopack established a solo pediatric practice on Rowe Boulevard in August of 1964. Over the years he expanded the practice to include several associate physicians and today the practice is known as Chesapeake Pediatrics located on Old Solomons Island Road. Dr. Kopack served as Secretary Treasurer of the Anne Arundel County Medical Society and the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. From 1977 to 1980 he was Chief of Pediatrics at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Attention deficit disorder and school achievement problems were of special interest to him. He practiced for 42 years before retiring in 2006. He enjoyed rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Deborah Whittington Kopack; his sister, Mary Rieder of Springfield, PA; two sons, David Francis Kopack of Annapolis and Alan Michael Kopack of Edgewater; three daughters, Laura Kopack O'Liddy and Ashley Kopack Klein, both of Annapolis, and Dr. Angela Kopack of Ellicott City; eight granddaughters; three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. Friends are invited to Dr. Kopack's Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, where his funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 18. Interment private.
