Virginia Mauro Obituary

Born in Burkeville, VA. on January 20, 1924, Ginny May, as she was known to her family and friends, died on January 7, 2015. She raised a family and positively encouraged and supported family and neighbors with tremendous kindness and an appealing sense of humor. She was an expert with Electrolux and Maytag appliances, and was also adept at directing household maintenance projects for her husband during the many years the family resided in Arnold. After attending Averett College and Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, while visiting her brother Waverly Green at a military hospital in Georgia in 1945 where he was recovering from combat wounds, she met and later married another wounded World War II veteran, Captain Carl Mauro, who died in 2005. After briefly living in Washington D.C., they moved to Anne Arundel County in 1947, settling in Arnold after short stays in South County and Lake Shore. Ginny May loved hosting community parties and events for the children in the neighborhood. She was known to leave Easter baskets on the steps of neighborhood children. While her grandchildren were young, she taught them to call her Gorgeous and insisted she was 21. For decades she kept the grandchildren engaged, entertained and sometimes confused. After her husband's death, Ginny May resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and John Hammond, in Annapolis; enjoying the activity and accomplishments of her six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as the company of the household's feline complement. Her two brothers, Doctors Waverly and Thomas Green of Bristol, TN predeceased her. She is survived by her sister Louise Lipscomb of Richmond, VA, daughters Virginia Holland of Wilmington, NC and Louise Hammond of Annapolis, MD, and son Carl Mauro of Durham, NC. Private services and burial will be conducted at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Donations in her memory should be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
