Rosine M. Hetherington passed away the morning of May 20, 2013. She was 86 years old. Much loved by her friends and family members, she spent the last four years of a rich and full life at Oak Hill Nursing Home in Escondido. Mrs. Hetherington was born Rosine Snyder on July 27, 1926, in Paris, France. Mrs. Hetherington was trained from the age of 8 to be a professional ballet dancer at the Paris Opera Ballet Company. When she was 15, during World War II, her father, Fred, who was an American businessman, succeeded in bringing Rosine, mother Madeleine and brother Emile to the United States. They lived in New York City where she became a soloist in a New York's Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company. There she became a favorite dancer of George Balanchine and other great choreographers of that era. In 1948 she performed in several Broadway shows that featured ballet solos. Chunmei, a lovely young Chinese lady passed on to her Lord peacefully from complications due to breast cancer. Chunmei (Sue) married Dr. Robert (Bob) Hoe in La Jolla, CA, and moved to La Jolla to make her residence here in 2007. Chunmei was an English teacher and a tour guide in Hunan and Fujien Provinces where she developed close relations with her students and classmates as well as the many tourists that she guided through their travels in southern China. In 2004 Robert Hoe, accompanied by his daughter, Rebecca, made a trip to China to find out if they could travel readily throughout China. Bob planned to revisit the places where he had been stationed in China with the US Navy in World War II. He and his daughter broke off from the regular tour on the Yangtzee River and flew to Xiamen, Fujien Province, where Bob was serving when the war ended. They were met at the airport by their guide, a young Chinese lady, Chunmei Tao. A bond was fashioned between the young Chinese lady and the American Navy Veteran that resulted in Chunmei acting as guide to Bob and Rebecca when they returned to China for the long planned tour of the WWII stations. Chunmei was convinced that she would visit America. When asked about her strong interest in America, she replied that she believed in the American principles of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Throughout the tour the bond was strengthened and by the end of the tour Chunmei had agreed to marriage and to live in America. Here in America Sue has joined the Chinese American Living Water Bible Church, and has received very strong support from her church "Sisters" during her illness. Chunmei is survived by her mother, two brothers and two sisters, Dong Yi, and Xiao Dong, and four nieces and nephews. Chunmei has been cared for during the last few months by her close friend and former students, Luo Hui, who traveled to America from Shanghai, China, to be with Chunmei.

Axel was truly a good dog. He passed away in Arlene's and Bob's arms on Saturday night, May 11, 2013. We are forever grateful to Dr. Diana Jones and her assistant Jackie of ER4 Pets who came to our home to help us say goodbye to him. Their compassion gently eased his suffering and our heartache. It was his wonderfully expressive face that won our hearts at the San Diego dog pound 12 years ago. Dr. Smith once said he could never play poker with a face like that. He loved to bring the newspaper in from the driveway every morning and to stand in the water at OB Dog Beach and bark his happiness. He liked to see his friends in Old Poway Park every morning on his walk with Bob. He also loved his grandchildren, Liana, Richie, Cassidy and Cameron. We wish to thank Drs. Teague, Smith and Shinzaki and their staff at Poway Animal Hospital for a lifetime of loving care. Rest in peace big boy, we miss you so much. Please hug your pet in Axel's memory.

Mary Ann Kinkead passed away peacefully on May 15, 2013, in La Jolla, CA, after recent significant illnesses. Mary Ann and Jordan retired and moved to La Jolla in 2005. Raised in Spokane, Washington, by her parents, Mary and John Childers, Mary Ann was introduced to ballet at the age of six and her love for dance was immediate. She entered Mills College in 1959, received her BA and MA in Dance and joined the Mills Dance faculty in 1966. She taught dance at Mills for the next 39 years. During that time she was Chair of the Dance Department, Dean of the Fine Arts Division, Provost and Dean of the Faculty, and acting president. Mary Ann had an exceptional spirit, a wonderful sense of humor, and boundless energy. Those who knew her cherished her generous moral support and forthright candor. She loved to teach and that love only increased over the years. She stood out for her devotion to her fellow faculty and her students and she was twice named the Mary Metz Professor for outstanding teaching. She published two textbooks on Labanotation, the technique that diagrams the choreography of dancers' motions. Her professional standing was acknowledged by the award of the Isadora Duncan "Izzie" for service to the San Francisco Bay Area dance community. After retiring, Mary Ann served for ten years on the board of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, where she found a new arena in which to promote her love of dance. She is remembered for her steadfast dedication to the highest standards in education and art. Mary Ann and her loving husband, Jordan (Pooh), were married in 1963 and would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in August of this year. She dearly loved her two sons, John and Cary and his wife, Tina; and her three grandchildren, Ames (8), Jordan (7), and Hayes (5). It was always clear that she valued her family's well-being far above her own. A Celebration of her Life will be held at Mills College in Lisser Hall on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 1:30 PM. Interment will be Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 11:00 AM. at Alta Mesa Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 695 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto, CA 94306.
