Joy Palfy, formerly Joy LaDonna DeLay, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 30, 1937, to John "Jack" and Iona DeLay. Our mom passed away at home on June 27, 2013, after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease.
Mom was a wonderful wife to her husband of nearly 53 years, Frank, and a terrific mother to her children, Robin and Kurt. She spent a significant part of her life devoted to her six grandchildren and, due to her illness, was not aware of two more grandchildren soon to arrive in her life.
Mom lived up to her name, "Joy", and was a very happy person. After a childhood in Omaha with her beloved "Mama" and brother, Jack, she set out to see the world. In 1959 she moved to Denver and was soon introduced to the man whom she would marry. Her husband-to-be had seen a photo of her before her arrival when Mom's girlfriend Sally was sharing a picture of her new roommate. Frank was instantly taken with "Joy" and told Mom's friend that he was going to marry that girl! They wed July 3, 1960, and went from Colorado to Wyoming to California, eventually settling in Poway in 1965.
Mom was very active in the community as part of the Junior Women's League, San Diego Right to Life, Poway Valley Riders Association, Girls Scouts and the neighborhood Bunco group. She was a serious study of the family's genealogy, amassing volumes of data extending into the 16th century. She was also a favorite "Aunt" to her many nephews and nieces.
Her world travel included a genealogy-based trip through Europe (including the communist countries of that time); living overseas in both Indonesia and South Korea for several years; and annual visits to Canada. Her dream was to visit her grandfather's grave in Shanghai, China, but unfortunately the grave was relocated before she could make the trip.
Joy is survived by her husband, Frank Palfy of Poway; daughter, Robin Joy (Terry) Maxson of Ramona; son, Kurt (Nora) Palfy of Willow Park, TX; brother, Jack (Karen) DeLay of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, David Valkema and Jacqulene Valkema both of Poway, Taylor Gans, Jake Palfy and Jordyn Palfy all of Willow Park, TX, and Daniel Maxson of Ramona; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by both of her parents and by her grandson, Eric Valkema.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013, at 11am at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary. Interment will immediately follow at Dearborn Memorial Park.
The family requests donations are made to the
in her memory.
