John B. Richardson Sr. Obituary
On August 17, 2013, John B. Richardson Sr. passed away of natural causes in Rancho Bernardo, CA. He was born May 11, 1915, in Mason City, IA.
After serving as Chief Medical Supply Officer during WWII he pursued a career in Hospital Administration. He graduated from Drake University, Des Moines, IA, with a BA in Business, followed by Washington University, St. Louis, MO, where he was in the second class for Masters in Hospital Administration.
His career took him to the Pittsburgh, PA, area where he was Chief Administrator at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning and Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights. During his 25 year tenure at Allegheny Valley Hospital, he oversaw three major building programs; developed internship and training programs for Nursing, Nurse Anesthetists, X-ray and laboratory technicians; improved working conditions for the employees; and established a pension program.
He was President of NW PA Hosp Assoc, Chairman of the Hospital Council of SW PA, and Board of Directors of the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania. He was a Lifetime Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives where he held many positions on the national level. In 1977 he was honored as Alle-Kiski Valley Man of the Year and retired in 1978.
During his service in WWII he met his wife Jean White. They married in 1945 and began their life together. In Natrona Heights they raised their four children and were both very active in many civic organizations. They retired to Rancho Bernardo in 1978 where he was able to enjoy his lifelong love of golf and travel and continued involvement in community efforts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 1984; twin brother, James; and sister, Mary. In 1991 he married Delice Englund with whom he enjoyed a wonderful second marriage until her death in 2007. He is survived by his four children, Ann Richardson (Glen) Englund, Thomas and Susan Richardson all of San Diego, and John Burke Richardson Jr. of San Diego/Santa Fe, NM. He leaves five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
John will be honored in a private family memorial at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church in September.
A memorial fund has been set up in his honor at Allegheny Valley Hospital Trust, 1301 Carlisle Street, Natrona Heights, PA 15065.
