Indian Land – Mr. Archie Howard "Bob" Plattenburger, 87, a resident of Indian Land for 51 years, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center–Pineville after a short illness and hospitalization. He was surrounded by his family during his final moments.
The funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joel McMakin officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery on what would have been Plattenburger's 88th birthday.
Born in Union County, N.C., Mr. Plattenburger was a son of the late James and Pearl Mullis Plattenburger. He served in the U.S. Army
as captain during World War II
and fought in the Battle of the Bulge (1944). He was a former POW and received a Purple Heart
, two Bronze Stars
and the Infantry Badge. Mr. Plattenburger was a member of the Fort Mill American Legion Post 43. He was a very strong advocate of working with the blind and veterans. He had been an electrical contractor.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Plattenburger; three sons, Archie Howard Plattenburger Jr. of Charlotte, Michael Douglas Plattenburger and his wife, Laura, of Columbia and Steve A. Wong and his wife, Kathy, of Inman; three daughters, Janet Bush of Rock Hill, Bonnie Bridger of Clermont, Fla., and Sandy Plattenburger Privette of Stanley, N.C.; two brothers, Thomas Plattenburger and Ralph Plattenburger, both of Waxhaw, N.C.,; his sister, Phyllis Belk of Marshville, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Adam, Allyn, Lexi, Elle, Mike, Mark, James, Ryan and Michael; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Along with his parents and many siblings, Mr. Plattenburger was preceded in death by a son, Sydney Edward Plattenburger; and a great-granddaughter, Cassie Buckaloo.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Wolfe Funeral Home.
