James Spalding Coale, 84, of Indian Land, S.C., passed away on May 30, 2018.
Jim was born to William Chase and Ruth Cain Coale in Baltimore, Md., on April 27, 1934.
Jim served 22 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Following his military service, he and his wife, Suzanne, settled in Irmo, S.C., where they lived for 30 years. Jim completed his second career as a manager with Union Camp Corp. at their Eastover, S.C., plant.
In 2012, Jim and Suzanne relocated to the Sun City Carolina Lakes community in Indian Land. Jim's greatest passion was his family. He and Suzanne enjoyed many travel adventures together, from an African safari to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his eight grandsons, who dearly loved their Poppa. Jim was the youngest of four brothers who grew up together on a farm in Harford County, Md.
Jim is survived by his wife, Suzanne; children, Scott (Peggy), Stuart (Melissa), and Elizabeth Chase (John); and grandchildren, Daniel, Philip (Rebecca), Chase, Austin, Alex, Coale, James and Burke.
A memorial service will be held June 30, 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Waxhaw, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's name to the National Wildlife Federation.
