Calvin L. Amoss

Calvin Leroy Amoss, 78, of Taneytown, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 19, 1933, in Sykesville, he was the son of the late William Irving and Elizabeth B. Hurt Amoss. He was the husband of Carolyn Jane Musgrove Amoss, his wife of 36 years.

He was a member of Taneytown High School Class of 1953, and began working as a huckster in the Washington, D.C., area, and later had a milk truck route. He was a 50-year auctioneer and had the honorary title of "Colonel."

He was a member of Tom's Creek United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 2226 in Littlestown, Pa., Harney VFW, Monocacy Lodge No. 203 AF&AM, the Maryland Farm Bureau, and the Carroll York Rite. He was a past member and past president of the Taneytown Lions Club. He was a lifelong farmer and held several apartment rentals in the area.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Randall Amoss and wife Kathleen, John Amoss, and Robin LaGrave and friend Scott Baugher, all of Taneytown, Dwayne Amoss and wife Maria, of Union Bridge, and Dwight Amoss and wife Tessa, and Scott Amoss, all of Littlestown; brother and sister-in-law George and Theo Amoss, of Westminster; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Amoss; and by a daughter-in-law, Kathy Trump-Amoss.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tom's Creek United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg, with the Rev. Tim Kromer officiating. Interment will follow in the Keysville Union Cemetery.
