Charles Henry Smith Jr., 79, a resident of Morning Breeze Assisted Living in Finksburg, formerly of Butler, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster from heart complications.
Born Aug. 17, 1933, in Finksburg, he was the son of the late Charles Henry and Virgie Wetzel Smith. He was the husband of Eva Marie Thompson Smith, who died in 1986.
He served in the Army
during the Korean conflict
. Prior to retirement, he had worked as a plumber with the Ed-Vern Company. He had also worked as a greeter for the Walmart in Cockeysville.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose
, Westminster Lodge No. 1381 and the American Legion Post No. 116 in Reisterstown. He enjoyed country music, singing and dancing. He was an avid storyteller and often liked recounting tales from his youth, especially that he weighed 13 pounds, 12 ounces at birth. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife before her death.
Surviving are a sister, June B. Welch, of Lothian; a brother, Clarence V. Smith, of Hanover, Pa.; several nieces and nephews, including Diana Blessing, of Finksburg, who cared for him; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Russell and Cindy Thompson, of Finksburg; and friends at Morning Breeze Assisted Living.
He was predeceased by brothers Lawrence E. and George F. Smith; and a sister, Catherine I. Wagner.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead, with the Rev. William Louis Piel officiating. A graveside service will be held at Falls Road United Methodist Cemetery in Butler.
