David E. Black Sr.

David Eugene Black Sr., 75, of Manchester, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at Transitions Healthcare in Sykesville. Born Aug. 10, 1936, in Manchester, he was the son of the late George Henry Jr. and Gladys Bowman Black. He was retired from the Carroll County Board of Education where he worked in general maintenance. He previously was a driver for R. E. Berwager Livestock and Earl Smith Bus Service of Manchester. He was a life member of the Manchester volunteer fire company for 52 years, where he had served as chief, assistant chief and president. He was a life member of the Maryland State Fire Chiefs Association and had been president and vice president of the Carroll County Fire Chiefs Association. He was a delegate for the County Fireman's Executive committee and had served on the Maryland State Fireman's Special Activities Committee. In 1983 he was elected to the Maryland State Fireman's Hall of Fame and in 1984 he was elected to the Carroll County Fireman's Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of the Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club Humanitarian Award. He also served on the Manchester Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Surviving are sons David E. Black Jr., of Richmond, Va., Henry George Black, of Manchester, and Douglas M. Black, of Chicago. He was predeceased by brothers William S. Black Sr. and George Henry "Sonny" Black III. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, where a firemen's memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Matthew S. Schenning officiating. Interment will be in the New Lutheran Cemetery in Manchester.
