Thomas Donald "Dan" Evangelista, 96, of Wayne, N.J., died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Sunrise Assisted Living.
Born in Haskell, N.J., he was the son of the late Rose Albanese and Marco Evangelista. He was the husband of Adelaide Evangelista, his wife of 59 years, who died in December 2012.
He was a graduate of Butler High School class of 1934, and Trenton State Teachers College in 1938, after which he began his 46-year career in education. Between 1955 and 1984 he served as administrator in the Paterson School System in school numbers 12, 10, 4, 28, 2 and the Norman S. Weir School. He fostered an appreciation for education in his family, with many following his footsteps in teaching careers.
He enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a chief specialist, rehabilitating injured war veterans stateside. He also served as mayor of the Borough of Wanaque from 1951 to 1959, serving the community in which he grew up.
Surviving are daughters Janice and husband Donald Hobart, of Westminster, Dawn and husband Carmen Russo, of North Haledon, N.J., Marcia and husband Oney Smith, of Frederick, and Pamela and husband Martin Turman, of Edmund, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Elston Evangelista, in 1951; and eight siblings.
A service was held Tuesday at at Moore's Home for Funerals, 1591 Alps Road, Wayne, N.J.
A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. today at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Butler, N.J.
