Walter C. Brown



Walter C. Brown, 88, of Harrisonburg, Va., formerly of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at  home.

Born Oct. 31, 1925, in Mount Airy, he was the son of the late Raymond G. and Edna M. Brown. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Pruitt Brown, his wife of 66 years.

He was a 1947 graduate of Virginia Tech, with a bachelor's degree in business administration. After enlisting, he served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 until 1945. On Aug. 30, 1947, he married his wife in Roanoke, Virginia.

They returned to Mount Airy, where he worked for Butler Brothers. In 1949, he began working for the Bank of Damascus as a clerk-teller. He was elected to the bank's board of directors in 1963 and named president and chief executive officer in 1983. He retired in 1987 after 38 years at the bank. During his banking career, he served as president of the Blue Ridge Conference of the Bank Administration Institute and president of the Montgomery County Bankers Association. After retiring, he served on the FCNB Bank advisory board from 1994 to 1999.

He was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Damascus Rotary Club. He also served five years as president of the Mount Airy Little League. An avid tennis player all his life, he enjoyed many hours on the courts with friends.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Nancy Nichols and husband Garry, of Harrisonburg, Va.,; a daughter-in-law, Roni Seiff Brown, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren Stephanie and Danielle Brown, of Tampa, Fla., Brian Nichols, of Boston, Mass., and Amy Elizabeth Nichols, of Blacksburg, Va.; and siblings Virginia Swain, Florence Clower and David Brown, and their families.

He was predeceased by a son, Bradley Dean Brown.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy, with the Rev. Steve Larsen officiating. A private interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
