Joseph H. Barnes, 89 of Westminster, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, Pa.
Born April 7, 1924, in Gamber, he was the son of the late Blanche Ward Barnes Brothers and Leslie Barnes. He was the husband of Doris Zepp Barnes, his wife of 57 years.
He served in the Army
as a staff sergeant during World War II
. He was assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 931st Signal Battalion and stationed primarily in the South Pacific during the Burma Campaign. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1941 and attended Strayer Business College.
Before retiring, he worked at 3M, Yingling General Tire Service and was owner/operator of Whitehall Tax Services.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, life member of the Westminster Elks Lodge
No. 2277, VFW
Molleville Farm Post No. 467, American Legion Carroll Post No. 31, Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF&AM, Boumi Shrine Temple, the Beehive Club and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Westminster.
He was treasurer of the Masonic Lodge Holding Corporation for many years. He was an avid Baltimore Colts Fan, enjoyed big band music, golfing, softball and yard work, especially tending to his tulip gardens.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a brother-in-law, Edward F. Wicks, of Westminster; a sister, Patricia Humbert, of Westminster; brother and wife Gene and Carol Brothers, of Westminster; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great- nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine B. Wicks, who died in 2010; and a brother-in-law, Joseph W. Humbert, who in 2012.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, where a Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 pm.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 3939 Gamber Road, Finksburg, with the Rev. Douglas Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow in Meadow Branch Cemetery.
