Stanley Bernard Miller, 87, of Lisbon, died Sunday, July 22, 2012.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born Dec. 9, 1924, at home on a farm in Elkridge, he was the son of the late John R. Miller and Jessie Mae Goode Miller. He was the husband of Doris Ruth Williams, his wife of 66 years, whom he married July 30, 1943, and who died in October 2009.
He was the fifth child of 15. He attended Ellicott City Elementary School. A World War II veteran, he was married just before being shipped overseas to England for advanced training in artillery and radio. He was a forward observer, radio operator and a machine gunner. He landed on Omaha Beach early on D-Day and fought for the next 12 months, including the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe, earning five bronze stars, a silver star, and the Gold congressional Medal of Honor for battles fought. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1945, and went home to meet his 2-year-old daughter for the first time.
He worked as a carpenter building houses for several years, then started his own building business. He and his wife had four more children in the next eight years. In 1959, he and his wife bought a farm in Lisbon, where he enjoyed raising cattle, pigs, chickens, crops and a large vegetable garden. In 1964, he retired from his business and went to work for Howard County as a building inspector. He soon became the chief building inspector/engineer. Since all his children had become adults and left home, he retired from the county in 1976, which enabled him to have time to pursue gardening and light farming. He became a master gardener in 1978. He continued to maintain a large vegetable garden and various trees and flowerbeds.
He and his wife wintered in Florida for about 20 years. However, he lived on his farm the remainder of his life. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7472 and a member of the Lisbon United Methodist Church.
Surviving are children Mary Ruth Harless and husband Emerson, Stanley B. Miller Jr. and wife Ellen, June Adele Mitchell and husband Allen, Claudia Annette Dorsey and husband Phil, and Jesse James Miller and wife Judy; grandchildren Steven and Susan Croston, Lucinda, Stanley B. III, Peter and Sarah Miller, Chester and Luke Mitchell, and Christian, Rebecca and David Dorsey; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Miller, who died in 2001.
