Alfred Eric Aldred, 94, of Taneytown, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Hampstead.
Born Dec. 30, 1919, in San Francisco, Calif., he was the son of the late Alfred and Emma Johnson Aldred. He was the husband of the late Ethel VonWerne Aldred, his wife of 60 years.
He attended both New York and Columbia universities in New York City. After working in the banking industry, he became a merchandise manager working in clothing imports. While employed by J.C. Penney Department Stores, he developed and supervised their quality control department. He went into business for himself thereafter, developing contacts in many parts of the world, including Central and South America, where he learned to speak fluent Spanish.
He was a veteran of the Coast Guard and a member of the American Legion Post in Glen Head, N.Y. He was formerly a member and past treasurer of the Taneytown Senior Center. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown.
He traveled extensively, visiting and working in more than 25 countries, including Japan, Portugal and Hong Kong, which were three of his favorites. His many hobbies included collecting, cutting and polishing gems and minerals, creating oil paintings and pastels, reading, boating, fishing, raising tropical fish, and solving New York Times crossword puzzles.
Surviving are children Robert Aldred and wife Rebecca, of Charlottesville, Va., Jane McKenzie and husband Bill, of Taneytown, and Dr. Bruce Aldred and wife Dr. Eve Aldred, of Lewes, Del.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brother and sister-in-law Albert and Delores Aldred.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
