Arthur Paul Garrett, 95, of Hampstead, died Sunday Aug. 18, 2013, at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Hampstead, where he resided.
Born Feb. 8, 1918, in Greenmount, he was the son of the late Arthur A. and Anna Mary Reed Garrett. He was the husband of Geraldine Rill Garrett, his wife of 67 years.
He had lived in his place of birth until April of this year. He was a 1936 graduate of Hampstead High School. He was a combat veteran of World War II
, having served in the Army's 194th Glider Infantry, which was later known as the 550th Airborne. He was airdropped into Southern France and Germany.
Prior to retirement, he had been employed as a deliveryman for Suburban Propane for 35 years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Hampstead, where he served on the building committee and was a former financial secretary. He was a past president of the church's United Methodist Men.
He enjoyed reading, especially historical subjects; gardening, both vegetables and flowers; and was an avid fan of the Colts, Orioles, Ravens and Maryland Terrapins basketball. He enjoyed travel and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in-law Linda G. and Charles D. Hollman, of Hampstead; grandchildren and spouses C. David and Tracy Hollman, Ryann H. and Eric Toomey, and Laura H. and Lt. Eric Zilberman; great-grandchildren Austin, Kylie, Hunter and Chase; a sister, Ruth L. Calp, of Hanover, Pa.; and a niece, Janice Garrett, of Raleigh, N.C.
He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Garrett; and a sister, Leda Garrett.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3239 Carrollton Road, Hampstead, with the Rev. Amy Sarah Lewis and the Rev. Dr. Stanley Harrell officiating. Interment will be in Wesley United Methodist Cemetery.
