Melvin Bostian Obituary

Melvin Stanley "Pete" Bostian Jr., 70, of Emmitsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at home after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 15, 1943, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Melvin Stanley Bostian Sr. and Rachael Victoria Valentine Bostian Myers. He was the husband of Deborah Ann Dec Bostian, whom he married Nov. 13, 1971.

His neighbors in Detour, Loren Kyle and Marion Sophia Austin, were close to him and treated him as another son. Upon his father's death in 1953, this bond grew closer and they helped his mother raise him. The Austin family continued to be a part of his family throughout his life. Later in life, he was also close with his stepfather, Guy Dennis Myers, of Westminster, who treated his sons as his own grandchildren.

He was a member of Keysville Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Francis X. Elder Post No. 121 American Legion in Emmitsburg. He attended Elmer Wolfe School and Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge, and went on to study mathematics on scholarship at Western Maryland College, now McDaniel college, where he graduated with honors.

After studying at the University of Maryland, he served in the Army and became a computer programmer. He worked in several positions as a programmer before moving to Frederick. While in Frederick, he worked for Litton Industries and Data Management Services at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at Fort Detrick. He also worked with the Interagency Data Processing Authority for Frederick County government, where he helped lead the county's adoption of computer technology in the 1970s. A longtime resident of Braddock Heights, he retired as director of computer services at the laboratory in 2010 and moved with his wife to Emmitsburg.

He had many interests over the course of his life. He owned and restored several classic automobiles before becoming interested in woodworking and furniture building. As he neared retirement, his woodwork led to an interest in antique tools. He became a member of Early American Industries Association and Mid-West Tool Collectors Association. He enjoyed visiting the various auction sales in the area with his cousin, Doug Bostian, where they made many friends and lent their expertise in identifying and grading the tools on offer there.

Throughout his life he liked reading, and would read several newspapers each day, as well as subscribing to many journals relating to his other interests. He also had a lifelong enjoyment of travel, which he preferred to do on back roads between small towns. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and liked making furniture for them and their dolls.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Kyle Bostian and wife Becky, of Frederick, Jeffrey Bostian, of Keedysville, and Michael Bostian, of Westminster; granddaughters Rachael and Sophia Bostian; stepsister Betty Valentine and husband Sam, of Taneytown; stepbrother Dennis Myers and wife Linda, of Rockwood, Tenn.; aunts Agnes Valentine Zimmerman, of Frederick, and Thelma Austin Baltzell, of Union Bridge; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Keysville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7301 Keysville Road, Keymar, with his pastor, Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date in Keysville Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Keysville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7301 Keysville Road, Keymar, MD 21757; the Debbie Bostian Family Involvement Fund at the Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 E. Church St., Frederick, MD 21701; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

My most sincere sympathies to the Bostian family. I worked with Pete for 26 years. He was the most intelligent person I ever knew and yet the kindest and most down to earth person. He was a good man.

Pete was more than a cousin to me. He was my best friend and my confidante. I will miss him forever. The picture that was put on of him on the tractor was one of the monthly sales we went to and always had so much fun. My heart is broken, but I know that Pete is well again. Until I see you again...Doug
