William Robert Burkett, 90, of Cresaptown, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born May 17, 1922, in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Harry and Etholyn McIntyre Burkett. He was the husband of Verna A. Burkett, his wife of 67 years.

He was raised in Frostburg.

He graduated from Beall High School in 1940 and was a graduate of Catherman's Business School. In high school he was an athlete and played on the basketball, baseball and soccer teams.

He retired from the B&O Railroad in 1982, after 40 years of service as a clerical/administrative labor relations staff member. He served in the Army Air Corps in Pacific Theatre during World War II.

He was a Charter member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Railroad Unit, the Davis Lodge No. 51 AF&AM, Keyser, McCoole V.F.W. Post No. 6775, Maryland Traveler's Club and DuBois Military Reunion Group in Pennsylvania. He had served as a Deacon for several years at the Keyser Presbyterian Church and presently a member of the Cresaptown United Methodist Church.

He and his wife raised their family in Keyser for 20 years. He enjoyed flying and had owned his own private aircraft that he flew for many years. He also enjoyed general photography and aerial photography.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son W. Paul Burkett and wife Mary Jo, of Mount Airy; daughter Marjorie J. Fazzalore and husband Rob, of Keyser; grandchildren Brian Faulk and wife Amanda, Celena M. Fazzalore, Robert Fazzalore III and wife Jaime, and Ryan S. Burkett; great-grandchildren Emma J. Burkett-Bryant, Ilario Fazzalore and Isabella Fazzalore; a sister, Margaret Thomas, of Oakland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Burkett Jr.; and a granddaughter, Allison S. Burkett.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser, with military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
