John Thomas Bytella, 79, of Westminster, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House.

Born April 18, 1934, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late John Peter and Alfreda Rutkow Bytella. He was the husband of Marlene V. Bytella, his wife of 58 years.

He was a graduate of Polytech Institution and earned his engineering degree from the University of Maryland. He was a senior engineer at Westinghouse for 39 years, where he designed computers for the space shuttle.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Westminster Elks. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working on cars, reading handyman books and sitting on the deck drinking his gin and tonic.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters and sons-in-law Gail A. and Thomas O'Brien, of Lewes, Del., Donna L. and Jeff Wiand of Elwood, Ind., and Sharon E. and Richard Carl, of Manchester; a sister, Carol Tyler, of Leesburg, Fla.; and grandchildren Melissa O'Brien, of Baltimore, Thomas O'Brien III, of Washington, D.C., Justin Wiand, Nick Wiand and Derek Wiand, all of Elwood, and Jacob Carl and Ben Carl, both of Manchester.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service, 3 p.m. today at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with Deacon Joseph Cinquino officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Hospice's Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
